Yankees' Luis Gil Optioned to Triple-A, Jasson Dominguez Reportedly Promoted Amid Stanton Injury

Andrew PetersApr 26, 2026

Amid early-season struggles, the New York Yankees are sending Luis Gil to the minors.

The team announced Sunday that Gil has been optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Here's a look at the team's updated rotation. Additionally, the Yankees are calling up Jasson Domínguez, with Giancarlo Stanton expected to go on the injured list after he reported right calf tightness on Friday, per The Athletic's Brendan Kuty.

Gil has made four appearances this season, posting a brutal 6.05 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP and nine strikeouts across 19.1 innings. He actually looked strong in a recent outing, allowing two hits and three walks but no runs in 6.1 innings against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.

However, he had a tough outing on Sunday, allowing six runs on five hits (two home runs) and three walks in four innings. He did not record a trikeout.

Following that rough start, New York opted to let him regroup in the minors.

Gil, the former AL Rookie of the Year 2024, is in his fifth season with the Yankees. He's coming off a season in which he made just 11 appearances amid multiple injuries.

The Yankees' rotation has been hit with a few injuries early on this year. Gerrit Cole is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but made his second rehab appearance with High-A Hudson Valley last week. The former Cy Young winner is currently on the 15-day injured list.

Carlos Rodon is recovering from the left elbow surgery he had last October, but he's made progress towards a return, throwing 65 pitches in a rehab start on Friday. Manager Aaron Boone said on the Foul Territory podcast last week that Rodon is ahead of Cole in his recovery.

"Probably a couple of weeks for Carlos, and probably a little bit more than that for Gerrit," he said. "We're certainly not going to rush anything, especially with Gerrit."

Despite being without the two starters, the Yankees are 18-10 this year, sitting atop the AL East. New York also ranks second in baseball with a team ERA of 3.26.
