Geno Smith's Future Addressed by Jets' Aaron Glenn After QB Cade Klubnik Selected in 2026 NFL Draft
The New York Jets added to their quarterback room by selecting Cade Klubnik in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL draft, but it sounds like veteran starter Geno Smith could be in for more than a one-year stint with the team.
While many viewed Smith as a bridge quarterback when the Jets acquired him from the Las Vegas Raiders and signed him to a veteran's minimum contract for the upcoming season, head coach Aaron Glenn told reporters that he could see the 35-year-old remaining in New York beyond the 2026 campaign.
"We brought in Geno to be our starter, and I'm not going to put a cap on him on how many years he can play, so I don't even go into the fact of he's here for a year [under contract]," Glenn said Saturday night, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. "As long as he's producing and as long as he's the best guy, he's going to continue to play."
The Jets raised some eyebrows when they traded up in the fourth round to select Klubnik, who was viewed as a late-round prospect following his disappointing final season at Clemson. B/R's NFL Scouting Department had him ranked as the No. 8 quarterback in this year's draft class.
With three first-round picks in the 2027 draft, New York is expected to finally add a franchise quarterback. Still, it would be hard to part ways with Smith if he has a resurgent year in 2026.
Glenn added that the Jets will let Klubnik develop during the upcoming season by having him compete with Smith, Bailey Zappe and Brady Cook for his spot on the depth chart.
"But, obviously, in this league, you have to have a system where there are backups and they've got to push the starter," Glenn added. "You always want to create that type of competition. Listen, I'm not going to sit here and say exactly where Cade's going to play. The thing is, those guys are going to go out there and compete. So right now, I like our room. I like where it's at."
