Drew Allar NFL Draft Pick Addressed By Steelers' Mike McCarthy Amid Aaron Rodgers Rumors
The Pittsburgh Steelers' decision to draft former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar in the third round naturally sparked speculation that the team is preparing for a future without Aaron Rodgers, but head coach Mike McCarthy said that is not the case.
McCarthy said that the selection has more to do with building the quarterback room than it does with Rodgers' impending free agency decision.
"No, not at all," McCarthy told reporters. "This is about developing the room and trying to make the room as deep as we possibly can."
The Steelers reportedly were hoping to hear from Rodgers about whether he plans to return before the draft, but the 42-year-old has not yet told the team what he'll do next year.
As it stands now, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph, Will Howard and now Allar in their quarterbacks room.
"These are all questions, answers, hypotheticals that really, it won't change what I've already said," McCarthy said. "I will coach the hell out of that room. I have a lot of confidence. I have history and experience that I will give everything I can to any quarterback in that room.
"We want to grow the quarterback room. We don't want to just rely on one quarterback."
