Garrett Nussmeier Praises Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid After Joining Chiefs in 2026 NFL Draft
Former LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier is excited to learn from Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid after the Kansas City Chiefs selected him in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL draft.
"It's a great opportunity for me to learn," Nussmeier said Saturday, per ESPN's Nate Taylor. "I'm just grateful that I have this opportunity. I can only imagine. I'm so excited to be in a room with those guys, coach Reid and his unbelievable offensive mind and sitting behind Patrick and steal some things from him and see the game through his eyes. It's going to be an unbelievable experience for me."
The Chiefs used their last pick in the draft to add Nussmeier, acquiring him with the No. 249 overall choice.
"It was an unbelievable feeling," Nussmeier said, via Taylor. "I felt like I was sitting there waiting forever. I couldn't have been more excited to see that [816] area code pop up. ... It was difficult for me sitting there and not understanding why. Obviously, I have belief in myself and where I believe I should have been valued.
"I said throughout this entire process it's not when, it's where. I couldn't be more blessed to go to such a great team."
The 24-year-old spent his entire college career at LSU, including a 2025 campaign in which he completed 67.4 percent of his throws for 1,927 yards and 12 touchdowns in nine games. He was also picked off just five times.
On the final big board from Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department, Nussmeier was listed as the No. 4 quarterback and No. 107 overall player in the class.
B/R NFL Scout Dame Parson brought up Nussmeier's timing in his scouting report.
"Nussmeier is a timing and rhythm quarterback, who delivers highly catchable passes at all three levels of the field," Parson wrote. "He is an excellent fit for teams that prioritize the quick passing game. Nussmeier will work particularly well inside a West Coast offensive system."
While Mahomes continues his recovery from a torn ACL, Nussmeier will join a group of backup quarterbacks that includes Justin Fields, Chris Oladokun and Jake Haener in Kansas City.
