Taylen Green to Browns, Fans React as QB Joins Shedeur Sanders, Watson, Gabriel on Depth Chart
The Cleveland Browns are adding another quarterback to the roster.
The team selected Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green with the first pick in the sixth round and the 182nd overall pick. He'll look to compete for a backup job in Cleveland while Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson vie for the starting job with Dillon Gabriel lingering.
Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department considered Green to be the No. 133 overall player and the sixth-best quarterback in this year's draft class. Green, who spent three years at Boise State and two years at Arkansas, threw for 2,714 yards, 19 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year, adding 777 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground.
Green's mobility caught the attention of scouts at the combine when he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.36 seconds, the fastest time among quarterbacks. That kind of speed could mean the Browns have plans to use him in situational packages since he will be by far the most mobile quarterback on the roster.
The Browns taking Green was a bit of a surprise, considering that ESPN's Matt Miller reported Wednesday that Cleveland didn't "anticipate drafting a QB this year." Clearly, the front office had second thoughts when it saw that Green was still available.
Green likely won't be up for the starting job in Cleveland this year, but that role remains unfilled heading into the offseason. Sanders ended the season as the starter, though Watson is now in the mix after missing all of last season.
Watson is the veteran in a young quarterback room, but he has also played just 19 games since the end of the 2020 season, his latest appearance being in October of 2024.
