WNBA Reveals 'Origins' Uniforms for Sparks, Liberty, Mercury in New Photos for 2026 Season
The three original WNBA franchises still remaining from the league's inaugural year in 1997 are getting special jerseys to celebrate their upcoming 30th season.
The league announced on Friday that the Los Angeles Sparks, New York Liberty and Phoenix Mercury will wear "origin" edition jerseys.
The jerseys feature the original logos for the clubs from the '97 season when there were eight teams in the league.
Los Angeles, Phoenix, New York and the Las Vegas Aces are the only remaining franchises from the inaugural year still in existence.
The Aces started out as the Utah Starzz before relocating to San Antonio in 2003. They underwent two nickname changes during their 15 seasons in San Antonio, spending 11 years as the Silver Stars before shortening it to the Stars from 2014 to '17.
After MGM Resorts bought the San Antonio franchise in October 2017, it was relocated to Las Vegas and adopted the Aces nickname.
As the Sparks, Liberty and Mercury prepare to tipoff their 30th season, the WNBA has now expanded to 15 teams with the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire set to debut this year.
The Sparks, Mercury and Liberty have combined for seven titles in 17 WNBA Finals appearances. Phoenix and New York are tied for the second-most Finals appearances in league history with six.
Friday's reveal comes as the WNBA preseason schedule tips off on Saturday with five games. The regular season begins on May 8 with three games, including the Liberty hosting the Connecticut Sun at Barclays Center.
