Allen Waived/Injured by Jets
Friday, Aug. 7
The 26-year-old defensive back has been back at home in his natural position of safety during training camp thus far, but he suffered an unfortunate non-contact Achilles injury during Thursday's practice, according to ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.
With his 2015 season being over, the Jets decided to waive the 2012 seventh-round draft pick, per Cimini.
While he could be claimed by another team, the likeliest scenario is that the former South Carolina standout will clear waivers before being placed on injured reserve by the Jets, according to Connor Hughes of the Journal Inquirer.
Allen has started 17 games over the past two seasons, and as pointed out by Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday, he did everything he was asked along the way for Gang Green:
Brian Costello of the New York Post echoed Martin's sentiments and lamented his misuse since entering the league:
Allen was pressed into action at cornerback last season due to the Jets' lack of depth outside, but with Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie back in the fold, he was set to battle for a potential starting spot at safety with Marcus Gilchrist, Calvin Pryor and Jaiquawn Jarrett.
The aforementioned players are all talented, but none of them have proven themselves to be consistent NFL starters to this point.
Strength in numbers at the safety position was New York's best chance of thriving in 2015, but now it looks as though even more pressure to perform will be placed on the shoulders of Revis and Cromartie.
