Kyle Shanahan 'Really Surprised' 49ers Didn't Get Mac Jones Trade Calls During NFL Draft Round 1
If there are teams interested in acquiring Mac Jones from the San Francisco 49ers, they aren't aggressively beating down the door to put together a trade offer.
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters he was "really surprised" they didn't get any trade calls for Jones during the first round of the draft on Thursday.
"Yeah," Shanahan said. "I mean, I'd be real surprised if he's not. It also really surprised me that no one came and offered something, like today."
Shanahan's response was to a question about if he expects Jones to be with the 49ers throughout the 2026 season.
After Jones played well in eight starts for the Niners last season when Brock Purdy was injured, it was assumed teams in need of a starter would look to pursue him in a trade.
The 49ers reportedly set a high price on Jones in trade talks early in the offseason. Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic noted during the NFL scouting combine that people in the league said San Francisco wanted "a second-round pick plus more" for the 27-year-old.
Shanahan has consistently said his expectation is Jones will remain in the Bay Area. He told reporters in January he would be "surprised" if the Jones was playing elsewhere next season.
There are practical reasons for the 49ers to hold onto Jones. His base salary in 2026 is only $1.4 million and he ran Shanahan's offense well when called upon.
Another reason is that Purdy has missed time due to injuries in each of the past two seasons. He missed two games in 2024 due to shoulder and elbow injuries. Shoulder and toe issues kept him out for eight games last season.
The 49ers went 5-3 in Jones' starts during the 2025 campaign. He threw for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and completed 69.6 percent of his attempts in those games.
