Cody Rhodes Posts Update on Eye Injury After Visiting Doctor amid WWE Backlash Rumors
WWE champion Cody Rhodes provided an update Wednesday on the eye injury he suffered during his WrestleMania 42 match against Randy Orton.
In a post on his Instagram Stories, Rhodes wrote, "'You won't lose the eye…' has to be the most positive yet absurd thing I've ever heard in a doctors office."
Rhodes beat Orton in the main event of Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 to retain the WWE title on Saturday, but he came out of the match worse for wear, as he was sporting a severe black eye during an appearance Monday night on Raw.
On Raw, Rhodes interrupted a CM Punk promo on the heels of Punk dropping the World Heavyweight Championship to Roman Reigns in the Night 2 main event of WrestleMania.
Their interaction concluded with Cody essentially telling Punk that he can have a WWE title opportunity whenever he wants it.
That led to speculation about a potential Rhodes vs. Punk match at the Backlash premium live event on May 9, but that is seemingly far from set in stone.
Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News) reported this week that it is "up in the air" regarding whether Cody will be cleared to wrestle at Backlash.
Meltzer also reported that although Rhodes was placed in concussion protocol, it is not believed that he suffered a concussion, nor did he fracture his orbital bone.
While WWE would undoubtedly love to have Rhodes available for Backlash given that he is one of the company's biggest stars, there may be enough other compelling storylines and matches to make up for his potential absence.
Chief among them is the possible world heavyweight title match between Reigns and Jacob Fatu following their confrontation Monday night on Raw.
