Yankees Players Reportedly Want New Alternate Road Jerseys For 1st Time in Team History

New York Yankees players are reportedly pushing for the first alternate jerseys in team history.

The Athletic's Brendan Kuty reported Wednesday that players "recently pitched higher-ups" on wearing navy batting practice jerseys featuring a "New York" wordmark in gray across the front during some road games.

Players currently wear pinstripes with the club logo at home and gray uniforms with "New York" in navy typeface across the front on the road.

They wear navy jerseys for batting practice and Spring Training games.

According to Kuty, multiple players told him Tuesday "they were hopeful they would get to wear the alternate jerseys soon, though they weren't sure whether it would happen."

The final decision as to whether to bring those jerseys into regular-season games will likely be up to Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, Kuty noted.

The Yankees are the only MLB club without an alternate jersey, per Kuty. They also join the Athletics as the only two franchises that have not added a City Connect jersey.

Similar variations of those current home and away uniforms have been worn by the Yankees for almost the entirety of the club's 124-year history.

The club has made small adjustments to their road jerseys over the past few years, including adding a jersey sponsor in 2023. The Yankees recently removed navy trim on the sleeves and white piping from around the wordmark ahead of the 2024 season.

The Yankees have worn adjusted uniforms only during special events including past MLB Players Weekends and a throwback Field of Dreams uniform for one game in 2021.

Steinbrenner announced one major change to some of the Yankees' traditional policies ahead of the 2025 season, when the club adjusted their rules to begin allowing players to keep "well-groomed beards" rather than prohibiting facial hair.

The Yankees have remained more traditional in other aspects. They are currently one of two clubs, alongside the Boston Red Sox, without player names on the backs of their jerseys. Only the Yankees follow that tradition at both home and on the road, and Steinbrenner said in 2026 the policy would "never" change.
