Venus Williams Gives Thoughts on Playing French Open After 10th Straight Singles Loss

Zach BacharApr 21, 2026

Venus Williams revealed that she's considering competing in the French Open after losing her 10th consecutive singles match.

"Yeah, I mean, to get my feet dirty, this was a great start," Williams said Tuesday, per Tales Azzoni of the Associated Press. "I'm not able to play Rome, I have other commitments, unfortunately, so I'm really super sad about that, actually. My husband is Italian, so we feel sad that we can't be there. So we would love to keep it going on the clay."

Williams suffered a 6-2, 6-4 defeat at the hands of Kaitlin Quevedo in the Madrid Open. It marked her first tournament appearance on clay since 2021.

"All these things take adjustments," Williams explained, via Azzoni. "I started my practice on clay a couple weeks after Miami. I haven't really played on clay in years. But I enjoy the clay, it's fun. I played against a very inspired opponent today."

The seven-time Grand Slam champion hasn't won a match on tour since taking down Peyton Stearns at the Washington Open in July 2025. Williams has already lost at the Australian Open, Indian Wells and the Miami Open this year.

Her last appearance at Roland Garros came in June 2021, losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1.

Women's singles action for the 2026 French Open will begin on May 24.
