Justin Fields Talks Chiefs' Culture, Excitement to Learn From Patrick Mahomes After Jets Trade
Justin Fields was very happy to join the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason after the team acquired him in a trade with the New York Jets.
"I wanted to come here because of the [Chiefs'] culture, because of [Patrick Mahomes] and to learn from him and Coach [Andy] Reid," he told reporters Tuesday. "Just the winning, to be honest. We of course knew of each other, but we really didn't communicate before coming here. I'm excited to learn from [Mahomes]. I'm already kind of picking his brain a little bit and just observing how he goes about things in the meeting rooms, field and stuff like that. I'm excited, of course, to work with Coach Reid and [offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy] and all the guys on offense."
It will be Fields' fourth team in as many seasons, and the 2025 campaign with the New York Jets was a struggle. The 27-year-old was just 2-7 as the starter, throwing for 1259 yards, seven touchdowns and an interception while completing 62.7 percent of his passes. He also rushed for 383 yards and four touchdowns.
And while he'll be a backup in Kansas City, he seems happy to have a change in scenery.
"Just having that culture—similar to when I was in Pittsburgh—just that winning mindset," he told reporters about playing for the Chiefs. "Even me being here for two days, you can tell why that happens, just the mindset of the coaches and players. The fact that 99 percent of the guys are here right now [at the offseason program] just shows you what kind of a team we're going to be this year."
