'Everybody Is Sleeping' on Carson Beck, Taylen Green Hyped and More QB Buzz from NFL Scouts, Execs
The consensus at the NFL draft when it comes to quarterbacks seems to be that Fernando Mendoza is the definitive top option, while Ty Simpson has gotten some buzz as a potential late-first-round or early-second-round prospect.
The next wave of quarterbacks includes LSU's Garrett Nussmeier, Penn State's Drew Allar and Miami's Carson Beck, with some believing Beck might even be the second best quarterback in this draft.
"Everybody is sleeping on him," a scout told Jeff Howe of The Athletic. "He's big. He's won a lot of games. He's got the arm. He's got the most translatable skill set of all of them outside (Mendoza and Simpson). He feels like more of a pro quarterback than the other (mid- to late-round options)."
It wasn't an isolated opinion.
"He would be the second (quarterback) for me" an AFC executive told NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. "He's played a lot of ball. He's really smart. He's got the right size. He has arm talent. And the value in which you have to get him in the quarterback market comes into play. You can take the guy in the second round, nobody's bitching about you, nobody's writing about you. And you might get a pretty good player. If I was sitting there in the seat and didn't have a quarterback, I'd much rather get Carson Beck at 34 than Ty Simpson at 28."
His divorce from Georgia and transfer to Miami ahead of the 2025 season did leave NFL evaluators digging deeper on his personality and leadership, however.
"They left wanting more from being a program guy, a team guy, a leader. Sounds like he had some preoccupations off the field, hanging out with those twins as opposed to hanging out with his teammates or leading the offseason," an AFC scout told Pelissero. "They were pushing him to be more of a leader and put in a little bit of extra time to become that franchise quarterback, or at least what you want in the NFL level, and maybe he was enjoying the college scene and the celebrity stuff off the field and got away from the program. Felt like he was disconnected even there—one foot out. But he's talented. He can throw the ball well. He's accurate. He can read defense, read coverages. They put a lot on his plate. But there's still a lot of his game that you like that'll translate to the NFL level. He's got a chance to still be successful. It's just the intangibles piece is what I think gives people some pause. And I'm not sure."
Beck was ranked the No. 5 quarterback and No. 120 prospect overall on the B/R NFL Scouting Department's final big board.
Another player worth watching is Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green
"Green is the traits guy (of the draft)," an executive told Howe. "If you can develop him, that's the dude."
"Green is a freak show," a scout added.
The B/R NFL Scouting Department considers Green the No. 6 quarterback and No. 133 prospect overall.
"The Green kid is so far off, but he has a chance," an NFC quarterbacks coach told Pelissero. "Like if someone got him in the fifth round, that's probably the sweet spot. Someone that big and that fast, throws it good enough—maybe that kid can develop."
