New Ty Simpson Rumors on Jets, Cardinals amid Rams Buzz Revealed by Adam Schefter, Todd McShay

Joseph ZuckerApr 20, 2026

The Arizona Cardinals "absolutely dig" Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson ahead of the 2026 NFL draft, according to The Ringer's Todd McShay.

McShay reported at the 37:40 mark in the newest episode of his podcast the Cardinals have a genuine interest in Simpson.

Arizona is on the clock with the No. 3 pick, which would be much higher than Simpson's draft evaluation. The Cardinals' next turn won't come until the 33rd selection. If they want the signal-caller badly enough, they may have to trade up.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the New York Jets also have Simpson on their radar.

The Los Angeles Rams were looking at him early in the predraft process, too, but may no longer be in play after they gave up the No. 29 pick in their trade for cornerback Trent McDuffie.

"League sources say the Rams had been eyeing him, but more so with the No. 29 pick than No. 13, which they still hold. Had the Rams not traded for McDuffie and held onto No. 29, sources say that Simpson would have been square in the conversation to land in Los Angeles behind Matthew Stafford," reported Schefter.

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on Saturday the Cardinals are the team "most often" linked to Simpson.

"It's hard to find a natural home otherwise," he said. "There could be some threats like the New York Jets. Probably not at two or 16, where they pick in the first round, but if Simpson were to fall late to the first, early second, do the Jets try to get involved?"

Arizona and New York are both rolling out temporary stopgaps at quarterback in 2026.

The Cardinals have Jacoby Brissett, who's reportedly looking for a pay bump now that he's in line to be a starter. The Jets reunited with Geno Smith and renegotiated his contract so that he'll be a free agent in 2027.

Maybe they're both content to tread water for a year and reassess the situation next spring. That's basically how the Las Vegas Raiders wound up in a position to get Indiana's Fernando Mendoza.

But the Cardinals and Jets clearly have a long-term need for a quarterback, and Simpson is a fringe first-rounder. He ranks 44th overall on Bleacher Report's final big board.

Taking him on Day 1 would provide the added benefit of a fifth-year club option in his rookie contract.

It's far from the biggest subplot to follow, but the gamesmanship between Arizona and New York when it comes to Simpson could provide some intrigue.
