Salvador Perez Clears Air with Royals Manager After Social Media Post, Returns to Lineup vs. Yankees

Zach BacharApr 19, 2026

Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez was back on the same page with manager Matt Quatraro after he disagreed with the decision to keep him out against the New York Yankees on Saturday.

"Little confused, you know. Not the right communication," Perez said Sunday, per ESPN's Bradford Doolittle. "I'm good. Family's good. Everybody's good."

Quatraro initially told reporters that he chose to give Perez a "mental breather" and held him out of Kansas City's lineup during Saturday's 13-4 loss to the Yankees, which led to a response from the nine-time All-Star on social media.

Quatraro also discussed the situation after Perez was back in the Royals' lineup on Sunday.

"We're in a good spot," Quatraro said, via Doolittle. "What stands out to me is the mental breather was, from my perspective, telling him the night before he wasn't playing so we can take something off his plate, of preparing for our starting pitcher and the game plan, the opposing starting pitcher.

"There's a tremendous amount that goes into that for a guy like him, and so I think that's where that became a little bit misconstrued."

Through 20 games this season, Perez is hitting .160 with two doubles and three home runs to go along with six RBI.

He particularly struggled in his last 10 games prior to Sunday's action, slashing .122/.159/.195 over that span.

The Royals are tied with the Chicago White Sox for the worst record in the American League, sitting at 7-14.
