Mets' Carlos Mendoza Backed by David Stearns amid Losing Streak, 'We Haven't Hit'
New York Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns threw his support behind manager Carlos Mendoza during the team's current nine-game losing streak.
"I think Mendy's doing a very good job," Stearns said Friday, per Andrew Seligman of the Associated Press. "I think, Mendy is putting players in positions to succeed. And we need to go out and play better."
"We haven't hit," he added. "And when you don't hit, you can look stagnant. I don't think we're stagnant, I think we are playing hard. I think our guys are preparing, but I also understand even from my seat when you don't hit, when there's not a lot of action on the bases, when you can't get the double with runners on base, you can feel stagnant and I recognize that. I'm also close enough to this on a daily basis to see what's going on and to know that we've got a group that cares tremendously, is working hard. And also, in many cases, has the experience to understand where we are in the calendar."
The Mets suffered a 12-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Friday, falling to 7-13 on the season and sitting at the bottom of the National League standings.
New York has struggled at the plate this season, ranking No. 24 among all MLB squads with a .229 batting average as a team. It also ranks No. 28 in the majors with a .632 OPS.
During the Mets' losing streak, they've averaged a mere 1.8 runs per game and have been shut out three times.
New York's slow start has been particularly disappointing considering it ranks No. 2 among all teams with a payroll of $370 million in 2026 (via FanGraphs).
The Mets will attempt to get back on track in the second game of their series with the Cubs on Saturday at 2:20 p.m. ET.
