Garrett Nussmeier to Chiefs, Fans React to QB's 2026 NFL Draft Slide After 7th-Round Selection

The Kansas City Chiefs snagged the top quarterback remaining on Bleacher Report's 2026 NFL draft board.

LSU's Garrett Nussmeier went to Kansas City with the No. 249 pick during Round 7 on Saturday in Pittsburgh.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, there's going to be an opportunity for Nussmeier to get "serious reps" in Kansas City amid Patrick Mahomes' injury rehab and he'll be competing to be the No. 3 QB behind Justin Fields.

Nussmeier is ranked as the No. 3 quarterback and No. 65 overall prospect on Bleacher Report's big board.

The 24-year-old was the top signal caller available after experiencing a precipitous drop in the draft. He was the 10th QB off the board.

Fans generally got over the initial shock of Nussmeier falling all the way to the final round. He may have at least landed in a good spot:

Nussmeier spent his first three seasons at LSU as a reserve, including a 2023 season spent backing up Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels.

He ranked fifth in the FBS with more than 4,000 passing yards during his redshirt junior 2024 season, although he also threw an SEC-high 12 interceptions to go along with his 29 touchdown passes.

He had started to improve that ratio by throwing 12 touchdowns to two interceptions during his 2025 season, although the quarterback was limited to just nine games while battling the entire season through a core injury he'd suffered during fall training camp.

Nussmeier told reporters in February he was "at 100 percent" and working on retraining himself from "bad habits" he had created while trying to throw despite the injury.

B/R NFL scout Damian Parson described Nussmeier as "a 'pro-ready' quarterback prospect and a natural thrower" whose "playing style resembles a pass-first point guard on the NBA hardwood."

"He is an excellent fit for teams that prioritize the quick passing game," Parson wrote. "Nussmeier will work particularly well inside a West Coast offensive system."

The Chiefs could now hope Nussmeier will get the opportunity to continue recovering from his injury and developing his throwing mechanics while working behind Mahomes and Fields in the depth chart this offseason.
