4 Takeaways From the 2026 UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals

Leo CollisApr 15, 2026

Here they are, folks, your matchups for the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League semifinals:

Atletico Madrid vs. Arsenal

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Bayern Munich

Titleholders PSG will be seeking to defend their crown. Arsenal and Atletico Madrid will be hunting down their first-ever Champions League title. And Bayern Munich will be hoping for trophy number seven in the competition.

While the quarterfinals brought clear winners and losers, plenty of other conclusions were drawn outside of the results.

Read on for some of the notable takeaways as we head into the Champions League's final four.

Real Madrid and Bayern Should Play Every Week

While the idea of a European Super League is (hopefully) dead and buried, games like this prove just how entertaining it could have been.

Real Madrid and Bayern played out a thrilling, high-octane second-leg matchup that delivered seven goals, some stunning attacking football, erratic goalkeeping, an idiotic red card, and some wild celebrations from the home crowd.

This is what football should be about, and for anyone who sat through Arsenal vs. Sporting instead, you have my sympathy.

Unfortunately, it might be a while before we see these two teams face off once more, but perhaps that's a good thing. Maybe these kinds of games should be a treat, experienced only every so often, to remind us all why we put in the hard hours watching the sport every week.

Then again, it would be nice to see this more often, wouldn't it? Michael Olise is a ridiculous footballer, and performing at such a high level against opposition of Real's caliber is obscene.

Elsewhere, Luis Diaz continued to prove why Liverpool were foolish to let him go in the summer, and Harry Kane did typical Harry Kane things.

Real deserve some credit, too, with Arda Guler putting in a star turn and Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior giving the Bayern defense a torrid time. In the end, though, Eduardo Camavinga's silly second yellow turned the tie in the German side's favor.

Glorious, breathtaking football. Can we introduce a third leg?

PSG Look Primed for Back-to-Back UCL Titles

Liverpool FC v Paris Saint-Germain FC - UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final Second Leg

Paris Saint-Germain's path through the Champions League is looking quite similar to their title-winning run last season.

After a disappointing League Phase finish, Les Parisiens have truly clicked into gear in the knockout stages, once again sending Liverpool out of the competition along the way.

Against the Reds this time around, they were sensational if not clinical in the first leg, before showing resilience and ruthlessness at Anfield on the way to a 4-0 aggregate triumph.

The backline looks impenetrable, the midfield has mastered the art of match control, and the forward line cannot be left unchecked for even a moment.

Against Bayern Munich in the semifinal, they will have their work cut out for them, especially based on the German side's performance against Real Madrid. However, in this kind of form, it's difficult to bet against the defending champions.

Arsenal Progress, but Premier League Title Looks in Serious Jeopardy

Arsenal FC v Sporting Clube de Portugal - UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final Second Leg

Arsenal stumbled through the quarterfinal tie against Sporting CP, progressing thanks to a 1-0 aggregate victory.

The Premier League leaders put in such an uninspired display over the course of 180 minutes. That performance suggests a Champions League title is beyond them, but it also hints the domestic title might be slipping from their grasp.

The Gunners have now won one in their last five games, coming in the first leg against Sporting thanks to a 91st-minute goal from Kai Havertz.

With a pivotal game against a comparatively rested Manchester City side coming up on Sunday, three dropped points and the Citizens closing the gap will make the fans sweat—and a trip to the Etihad Stadium with the title on the line is no picnic.

With teams eventually figuring out how to defend set pieces against Arsenal, there isn't much threat coming from elsewhere. That could spell doom in the stretch run, when tired legs and minds will struggle to notch vital goals to deliver a long-awaited league title.

Arsenal will find things hard against a rabid Atletico Madrid in the semifinals, and an exit at that stage is looking increasingly likely. Things could soon get even worse, and the "bottle" memes will be absolutely relentless.

Atletico Madrid are Barcelona's Cup Kryptonite

Atletico de Madrid v FC Barcelona - UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Quarter-Final Second Leg

The sixth and final meeting between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid this season finished with a win for the former, but in the end, it was the latter that truly claimed the victory.

The Champions League quarterfinal double-header wrote a similar story to the Copa del Rey semifinal, with Atleti's first-leg cushion proving enough to get past Barça despite a second-leg scare.

While Atleti succumbed to home and away defeats to Barcelona in La Liga, they have been a much different proposition in two-legged knockout matchups, eliminating the Blaugrana from two cup competitions.

A red card in each UCL quarterfinal leg for the Blaugrana certainly helped Los Colchoneros' cause, but it was the characteristic warrior mentality of Diego Simeone's side that was the key to progression to the next round.

The La Liga title should be all but sewn up for Barça, but they will be cursing Atletico Madrid for preventing them from picking up more silverware.

With a semifinal meeting against Arsenal up next, the last Spanish team in the competition will sniff a chance to return to the final for the first time since 2016, especially after the Gunners' lackluster showing against Sporting.
