"They were a lot more animated when I was younger," he said. "When I was playing club volleyball, a lot of people admired it and thought it was different in the sport. It used to be a full wrap-around clap when I was 14 or 15."
After redshirting for the Matadors in 2025 after transferring from Grand Canyon, he ranks second on the team this season with 132 kills. CSUN, which has a 12-12 record and is ranked No. 18 in the AVCA men's volleyball poll, will close out the regular season with a pair of matchups against No. 2 Hawaii on Friday and Saturday.
Since his highlight video went viral, Lucas' popularity online has exploded. He told Zeigler that he's gained well over 80,000 new followers on Instagram over the past few days.
"The support has been amazing," Lucas said. "I don't know what other word could describe it. People rallying behind something that isn't talked about enough in athletics, college, amateur or pro ā being LGBT. It's been a little overwhelming, but overall it's been very positive. I'm happy to have people backing me."
