Shedeur Sanders' 'Playmaking Ability' Hyped by Browns HC Monken Ahead of Deshaun Watson QB1 Battle

Doric SamApr 15, 2026

The Cleveland Browns are expected to hold a quarterback competition this offseason between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson for the starting job, but Sanders appears to have already impressed his new coach.

While speaking to ESPN's Kevin Clark for This Is Football, Browns first-year head coach Todd Monken hyped Sanders for his impressive rookie year and made it clear that he's looking forward to coaching the 24-year-old.

"I think you see playmaking ability. I think you see a player that is confident in his skill set," Monken said at the 11:58 mark. "So when you see that playmaking ability and inner confidence, you say, 'OK, there's something to work with there.' So I think that's the thing that excites you."

Sanders was selected to the Pro Bowl as an alternate after starting seven of his eight appearances during his rookie campaign and throwing for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Monken went on to praise Sanders' athleticism before accepting the responsibility of developing him and the rest of Cleveland's young players as the Browns continue their rebuild.

"I do think what you see on tape are those aspects," Monken said. "A very young player that really didn't grow up in a pro-style offense. That's not his fault. ... Now, it's gonna be our fault if we can't develop them. Then it's our fault. Our job is to develop all the players that show up in the building and try to get the best out of all of them, create the best version of them."
