New Giants Trade Rumors as Dexter Lawrence Contact Talks Reach 'Impasse' Ahead of NFL Draft
Dexter Lawrence's time in New York may indeed be coming to a close.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the New York Giants and the star defensive tackle, "have been talking about a new big-money extension" but have "reached an impasse, sources say. The Giants have engaged with teams on a potential trade and that will continue. It should come to a head before the Draft."
General manager Joe Schoen left the door open for any possibility earlier on Tuesday.

"I'll echo what coach said last week: We'd like for Dexter to be here, and at some point we'll come to a resolution here, whatever that may be," he told reporters. "We'll see."
"He's super, super important. He's a cornerstone football player—not really a cornerstone, more like the middle stone," new Giants head coach John Harbaugh said in March. "He's right in the middle. He's a very big stone, and he's a very active, athletic one."
Lawrence, 28, has no guaranteed money left on his current deal and wanted an extension last offseason, though the Giants ultimately temporarily addressed the situation by adding $3 million in incentives for the 2025 campaign.
The three-time Pro Bowler didn't have a very good year in response, recording just 0.5 sacks, four tackles for loss and eight quarterback hits. The sacks and quarterback hits were career lows, while the tackles for loss were his worst mark since his rookie season in 2019.
This offseason, with a new deal seemingly not on the horizon, Lawrence requested a trade. That seemed to spur on some contract negotiations, but they have stalled. Losing Lawrence would leave a major hole in the middle of New York's defense—and he's under contract, so the Giants don't have to trade him—but at this point a divorce feels more possible than ever.
