Eagles' Howie Roseman Talks 'Unfair' and 'Unfortunate' Jalen Hurts Criticism in New Articles

Adam WellsApr 14, 2026

In the wake of recent articles detailing Jalen Hurts' standing within the organization, Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman addressed the talk around his quarterback on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters, Roseman called the reporting around Hurts "unfair" and "unfortunate" from the Eagles' perspective.

Since the Eagles' season ended with a playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, there have been multiple articles about Hurts and what went wrong for the offense throughout much of 2025.

In January, The Athletic's Michael Silver reported Hurts was "the source of much internal frustration, including from teammates other than (A.J.) Brown" and some of his "limitations" that have been present throughout his career:

"Plenty has been written about Hurts' limitations as a quarterback, including a lack of willingness to operate from under center (though Philly did that more in 2025), an aversion to pre-snap motion, an inability to make quick post-snap reads and a reluctance to attempt intermediate and in-breaking passes. He also ran the ball less this season, which lessened his impact as a dual threat. Some of these issues may have been a function of scheme and play calling, but Hurts needs to be pushed beyond his comfort zone."

More recently, ESPN's Tim McManus and Jeremy Fowler released a report on April 1 in which Hurts was described as "not the most coachable player" and having "pushed back" when the team has attempted to make changes that would help diversify their scheme.

Per the ESPN report, one person close to Hurts said he needs to work with a coach who will "check him" because he was surrounded by "too many 'yes' people" last season.

The Eagles did make a change at offensive coordinator, replacing Kevin Patullo with Sean Mannion, who spent the past two seasons on Matt LaFleur's staff with the Green Bay Packers.

It's worth noting that the two offensive coordinators Hurts has had the most success with in the NFL thus far are Shane Steichen and Kellen Moore, both of whom were hired from outside of the organization.

Patullo and Brian Johnson, who had the job in 2023, were both internal promotions and worked on the Eagles staff dating back to Nick Sirianni's first year as head coach in 2021.

Roseman and the Eagles will be hoping that their changes in the offseason lead to better production from Hurts.

They have yet to miss the postseason since Hurts became the full-time starter in 2021, but their playoff results have either been boom or bust with one Super Bowl win in two appearances and three losses in the Wild Card round.

Hurts finished last season with 3,224 passing yards, 421 rushing yards and a career-high 25 touchdown passes in 16 games.
