Mike Vrabel, Patriots Reportedly Add Former Giants DC to Coaching Staff for 2026 NFL Season
The New England Patriots hired former Tennessee Titans and New York Giants defensive coordinator Shane Bowen as a defensive analyst Friday, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Bowen and Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel have extensive experience working together, which likely played a significant role in the hiring.
Vrabel and Bowen were on the same coaching staff with the Houston Texans from 2016 to 2017, and then when Vrabel was head coach of the Titans, Bowen was his outside linebackers coach from 2018 to 2020 and DC from 2021 to 2023.

New Report on Colts-Richardson Situation
The 39-year-old Bowen had mixed results during his five-year run as an NFL DC from 2021 to 2025.
His first year in the role under Vrabel in Tennessee was his best, as the Titans ranked 12th in total defense and sixth in scoring defense in 2021.
The Titans were then 23rd in total defense and 14th in scoring defense in 2022, and 18th in total defense and 16th in scoring defense in 2023.
After Vrabel was fired and the coaching staff was overhauled in Tennessee in 2024, Bowen became the new defensive coordinator with the Giants under Brian Daboll.
Success was fleeting for Bowen in New York with the team ranking 24th in total defense and 21st in scoring defense in 2024, and 28th in total defense and 26th in scoring defense last season.
Like Daboll, Bowen did not make it through the entirety of the 2025 campaign, as the Giants fired him from his role in November.
In New England, Bowen will join a Patriots team coming off a hugely successful 2025 campaign.
The Pats went 14-3 and won their first AFC East title since 2019, plus they reached the Super Bowl for the first time since 2018, falling to the Seattle Seahawks.
Defense was a huge part of the Patriots' success, as they ranked eighth in total defense and fourth in scoring defense last season.
Also, despite the offense struggling in New England's first three playoff games, the Pats still managed to reach the Super Bowl thanks largely to the defense holding the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos to just 8.7 points per game.
Bowen will become part of a talented defensive coaching staff in New England, led by defensive coordinator Zak Kuhr, who was the team's defensive play-caller last season.
