Alex Ovechkin Headlines NHL King Clancy Memorial Trophy Award Nominees for All 32 Teams
Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin headlined the list of nominees for the NHL's 2025-26 King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which was released on Friday.
The King Clancy Memorial Trophy was first awarded in 1988 and is presented annually "to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy humanitarian contribution in his community."
Each player is nominated by their respective team.
The winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy will receive a $25,000 donation to benefit a charity or charities of his choice. He'll also be eligible to elect that his team receive a grant of up to $20,000 from the NHL to help organize a special activation related to his humanitarian cause.
A selection committee including NHL commissioner Gary Bettman as well as former winners of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy and the NHL Foundation Player Award will chose the winner.
If Ovechkin wins the trophy, he'd be the first Capitals player to earn the honor since Olaf Kölzig in 2006.
Ovechkin is in the midst of his 21st season with Washington, as the NHL's all-time leading scorer has amassed 31 goals and 30 assists in 79 games.
While he'll be turning 41 years old during his 2026-27 campaign, he still hasn't made a decision regarding a possible retirement.
Although the Capitals hold the No. 6 spot in the Metropolitan Division and are in danger of missing the playoffs, Ovechkin has an opportunity to add some more hardware to his collection.
