Browns QB Battle with Shedeur Sanders, Deshaun Watson, Dillon Gabriel Discussed by HC Todd Monken

Timothy RappApr 8, 2026

New Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken doesn't have a preliminary depth chart in mind at the quarterback position, with Deshuan Watson, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel all in the mix.

"No, not really, because there's enough there of all three," he told reporters on Wednesday. "I mean, I think we'd all be able to say that. There's enough there to really like Deshaun [Watson] and the way he plays. There's enough there to really like the way Shedeur [Sanders] played at the back end of the year. And there's enough early in the year from Dillon [Gabriel] that is playing the position at a very high level."

There's a fairly strong argument to be made that none are particularly appealing options.

Watson, 30, last played in the 2024 season, throwing for 1,148 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in seven games, completing 63.4 percent of his passes. He was 1-6 as the starter.

The Browns gave Gabriel six starts in his rookie season. He threw for 937 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions, completing just 59.5 percent of his passes and was 1-5 as the starter.

Sanders took over in the second half of the year and opened up the downfield passing attack a bit, going 3-4 as the starter after throwing for 1,400 and seven scores. But he also had 10 interceptions and was sacked 23 times, creating his own issues.

So consider the team's quarterback competition very much open.

"I really, it's been brought up a lot more to me than really what I think about, other than, yeah, someone's going to have to start off first and someone's going to go second, someone's going to go third," Monken told reporters. "Then we'll be willing to switch that. That's easily, on a daily basis, what we see, just like any position, that's not set in stone. That's something we can flip, just like the practice plays. We can flip that any given day to how we see fit that gives us the best chance to develop our players. Now, how they go about it, how they study, how they take care of their body, how they manage our team, how they lead, those are set in stone. Those are non-negotiables."
