Penta Retains WWE IC Title in Wild Ladder Match at WrestleMania 42 vs. Rey Mysterio and More Stars
Penta won a six-pack ladder match on Night 2 of WWE WrestleMania 42 on Sunday to retain the Intercontinental Championship.
WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio, Dragon Lee, Je'Von Evans, Rusev and JD McDonagh all fell short, as Penta scaled the ladder and secured the IC title belt to continue his reign.
Penta, who made his WWE debut in January 2025, won his first championship in the company just over a year later when he defeated Dominik Mysterio for the intercontinental title on the March 2 episode of Raw.
Finn Balor stopped Dirty Dom from using the ring bell hammer against Penta in the match, and Penta took advantage en route to arguably the biggest victory of his career.
In the weeks that followed, Penta defended the title in open challenges, beating the likes of El Grande Americano, Lee, Dominik and Kofi Kingston.
With so many worthy challengers lining up for an opportunity at his Intercontinental Championship, Penta cemented his status as a fighting champion by setting up a huge WrestleMania match.
Penta spoke to Raw general manager Adam Pearce, and they agreed on a ladder match, which Lee, Evans, Rusev and McDonagh qualified for via wins on Main Event.
After Penta, Lee and Evans beat Los Americanos in a six-man tag team match on the April 6 edition of Raw, their celebration was interrupted by Rey Mysterio.
The legendary luchador said he spoke with Pearce, and they were in agreement that he needed to be part of the ladder match in order to truly make it fit for the WrestleMania stage.
Despite Mysterio's inclusion and so many other viable contenders in the mix, Penta was up for the challenge, and he retained his IC title at The Showcase of the Immortals.
