Finn Balor Beats Dominik Mysterio at WWE WrestleMania 42 After Judgment Day's Surprise Turn
Thanks in part to the return of his "Demon" alter ego, Finn Balor defeated Dominik Mysterio on Night 2 of WWE WrestleMania 42 on Sunday.
Balor and Mysterio were stablemates in The Judgment Day for nearly four years until their alliance crumbled last month when Dirty Dom, JD McDonagh, Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez attacked the Irishman.
The relationship between Balor and Dominik had been tenuous for months leading up to that moment, but Mysterio dropping the Intercontinental Championship was the final straw.
During a title defense against Penta, Mysterio asked McDonagh to hand him the hammer from the ring bell, but Balor stopped him from doing so, which resulted in Penta beating Dom for the IC Championship.
Mysterio confronted Balor over his interference, prompting the Irish Superstar to speak his mind about Dominik for the first time. Balor suggested that Dom's estranged father, Rey Mysterio, may have been right about him before calling Dominik a "spoiled, little p---k."
Dom pushed Balor, and Finn retaliated with a Pelé Kick, only to get jumped and viciously beaten down by the rest of The Judgment Day.
That officially ended Balor's lengthy run as a member of the group, and it prompted him to go back to his roots for his grudge match with Mysterio on The Grandest Stage of Them All.
In a vignette touting the match, Balor essentially confirmed he would be decked out in his Demon paint for the clash with Dominik.
Dating back to his time in Japan, Balor used the Demon paint to intimidate his opponents in big matches. He is perhaps best known for donning the paint in pay-per-view bouts during his initial run in NXT.
While his utilization of the Demon has been few and far between on the main roster, Balor clearly wanted to make Mysterio pay at WrestleMania.
That is precisely what Balor did, as he beat his former friend and gained momentum ahead of what could be a fruitful singles run.
