The expansion draft is taking place shortly after the WNBA and the Women's National Basketball Players Association agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement in time for the season to start May 8.
That set the league on track for a busy offseason, with the expansion draft followed by the April 13 WNBA draft and April 19 start of training camp.
This all started with each of the 13 active WNBA teams submitting a list of up to five players who can be protected from the expansion draft.
The Tempo and Fire then got the chance to select from the list of unprotected players, with a few caveats in place. Each expansion franchise can choose a maximum of two players from any existing franchise (one per round) and can only select one player set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
Both expansion franchises will next continue building their rosters in the upcoming WNBA draft. The Tempo will select at No. 6, followed by the Fire at No. 7.
This marks the WNBA's first expansion since the Golden State Valkyries joined the league in 2025. The league already plans to add three more teams in Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia by 2030.
