DJ Moore-Bills Trade Blasted by NFL Exec Despite Help for Josh Allen, 'What Is Going On?'
The Buffalo Bills got aggressive this offseason in finding a No. 1 wideout for superstar quarterback Josh Allen, but at least one NFL executive was perplexed by the move.
Buffalo sent a 2026 second-round draft pick to the Chicago Bears in exchange for veteran wide receiver DJ Moore and a 2026 fifth-round pick last month, bringing in a quality pass-catcher with four career 1,000-yard seasons to his credit.
However, an anonymous NFL exec criticized the trade when speaking to Mike Sando of The Athletic this week, saying, "DJ Moore was gonna get cut, and they gave up a second-round pick to get him. They gave up a second-round pick and $40 million [in guarantees]. What is going on?"
After acquiring Moore in a trade with the Carolina Panthers in 2023, the Bears signed him to a four-year, $110 million contract extension one year later.
However, after recording a career-high 1,364 yards and eight touchdowns in his first year with the Bears, Moore's production started to take a hit.
In 2024, Moore finished with 98 catches for 966 yards and six touchdowns during his first campaign with Caleb Williams as his quarterback. Then, Moore's numbers truly bottomed out last season following the arrival of head coach and offensive guru Ben Johnson.
While he did score six receiving touchdowns and one rushing touchdown, Moore's 50 catches and 682 yards were both career lows.
Rather than having one clear, go-to guy in the passing game, the Bears spread it around last season, as Moore, Luther Burden, Rome Odunze and Colston Loveland all had between 44 and 58 catches, and between 652 and 713 yards.
That, along with Moore's cap number, seemingly made him expendable this offseason, and it is fair to wonder if the Bears would have simply released him had they not found a taker on the trade market.
Rather than risking Moore getting traded or signing elsewhere, though, the Bills parted with a Day 2 draft pick in order to secure him.
On top of that, the Bills guaranteed $15.5 million of Moore's salary in 2028 upon completing the deal, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.
That means the Bills are essentially committed to the soon-to-be 29-year-old for the next three seasons.
It is a risky move for Buffalo since Moore's contract could become a major hindrance if he doesn't work out as hoped, but given that Khalil Shakir led the team with 821 receiving yards in 2024 and 719 receiving yards last season, the Bills desperately need a WR1.
