Steelers to Change Playing Field Surface After 'F-Minus' NFLPA Report Card Grade

The Pittsburgh Steelers had rough NFLPA report card grades, and they're taking action to fix at least one of their issues.

Steelers owner Art Rooney II said Wednesday that Acrisure Stadium is getting a new playing surface after Pittsburgh received an "F-minus" in the home game field section of the report card.

The new surface will be Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass, and Rooney said the decision was the team's and not the NFL's.

"The fields actually will be planted at a sod farm," Rooney told reporters. "So, we won't get the new field until sometime in August. But as we've talked about, it'll be a new surface, a new kind of grass mixture. And look forward to seeing how it works.

"We chose to make the change. It wasn't mandated by the league. It's been in use in some other stadiums around the country and seems to be having success, so we decided to make the change."

A new playing surface is a start, but the Steelers still have work to do.

The Steelers received an "F" or "F-minus" in treatment of families, home game field, locker room and team travel. They only "As" they received were for head coach and special teams coordinator, so Mike McCarthy and Danny Crossman are in good standing heading into the year.
