After the game, Marlins radio broadcaster/pregame radio host Stephen Strom asked Alcantara what made his 13th complete game different from his previous 12.

"A lot different. It's been a long time without throwing a complete game, but this one is special for me. All my family here. Fans not here, but we still love them because we know this is a hard sport, and we know sometimes they gotta do something. They weren't in the house, but yeah, today was great for me."

Only 6,505 fans were in attendance at LoanDepot Park to see Alcantara dominate. The sparse crowd didn't go unnoticed, although Alcantara made clear it was still a happy and joyous occasion for him. It certainly was for the team and fans present as well.

Alcantara made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2017. He was traded to the Marlins in Dec. 2017 in the Marcell Ozuna deal and became a full-time starter in 2019.

Three years later, Alcantara tossed six complete games en route to 2022 National League Cy Young award honors. He posted a 2.28 ERA in 32 starts while striking out 207 batters in an MLB-high 228.2 innings.

Alcantara hadn't thrown a complete game since Aug. 12, 2023, when he defeated the New York Yankees. His last complete game shutout was April 4, 2023, when Alcantara took down the Minnesota Twins.

Unfortunately, Alcantara's 2023 season ended on Sept. 3 after he felt discomfort in his right forearm during a start at the Washington Nationals. He was later diagnosed with a right UCL sprain following an MRI and underwent Tommy John surgery a month later. Alcantara missed the entire 2024 season.

The 2025 season was understandably a struggle for Alcantara as he tried to work his way back to his previous form. He finished the year with a 5.36 ERA over 31 starts.

However, Alcantara has been phenomenal over his first two starts in 2026, allowing no earned runs over 16 innings while striking out 12. Simply put, he looks like a bona fide ace again and one of the best pitchers in the majors.

It's an incredible comeback story for Alcantara, who is enjoying well-deserved success. The Marlins are off to a hot 5-1 start as well to lead the National League.

Alcantara will be back on the mound Tuesday vs. the Cincinnati Reds.
