Sabrina Ionescu Reveals She'll Sign New Liberty Contract Ahead of 2026 WNBA Season

Zach BacharApr 1, 2026

Four-time WNBA All-Star Sabrina Ionescu revealed that she plans to sign a new contract with the New York Liberty for the 2026 season.

"Obviously I'm where I'm supposed to be," Ionescu said, per ESPN's Alexa Philippou. "Never thought anything different, and so excited to be able to sign and get started. It's coming up really quickly, so excited to get all this behind us and just be able to start our season and get going in New York."

Ionescu previously signed a two-year extension worth approximately $410,000 with the Liberty in May 2023.

She isn't the only New York star planning on returning in free agency, as two-time MVP Breanna Stewart also confirmed that she'll be coming back to the team on a new contract.

"I'm gonna just set the record straight here: I will be staying in New York. I'm not planning on taking any free agency meetings, even though I am an unrestricted free agent," Stewart said on her podcast Game Recognize Game with Stewie & Myles. "My family is set up here, we're solid here... I'm gonna be back in New York, and that's all there is to it."

Ionescu and Stewart both structured their contracts to expire at the end of the 2025 season, as the WNBA and its players recently reached a new collective bargaining agreement.

As part of the CBA, the league's salary cap rose from $1.5 million per team in 2025 to $7 million per team in 2026.

Ionescu should command a hefty contract as a free agent, as she's coming off another strong season with the Liberty.

Despite shooting a career-low 29.9 percent from three-point territory, she still averaged 18.2 points and 5.7 assists to go along with 1.3 steals per game. Ionescu also connected on 49.3 percent of her two-point field goals.

The Liberty will open the 2026 regular season against the Connecticut Sun on May 8.
