Becky Lynch Beats AJ Lee for WWE Women's IC Title at WrestleMania 42

Becky Lynch beat AJ Lee for the Women's Intercontinental Championship on Night 1 of WrestleMania 42 on Saturday, making The Man the first three-time women's IC champ in WWE history.

Lynch's well-known rivalry with referee Jessika Carr took centerstage here at one point, with the two getting into a shoving match.

Lee later had the upper hand after hitting Lynch with her own finisher, the Manhandle Slam, before locking in the Black Widow. However, Lynch was able to get to the ropes.

Eventually, Lynch orchestrated a victory. Lee charged at Lynch, who then pulled Carr to use as a body shield. Carr got sandwiched and absorbed the blow. In the interim, Lynch slammed Lee's head into a turnbuckle the new champ previously exposed and then executed the Manhandle Slam. Lynch then got the pin for the win and the belt.

WrestleMania marked a rematch of the bout Lynch and Lee had at Elimination Chamber in February, which saw Lee defeat Lynch and win her first title of any kind in WWE since 2014.

That particular match was a long time coming, as Lee made her return to WWE in September, ending a more than decade-long retirement in the process.

At the time, Lee's husband, CM Punk, was embroiled in a rivalry with Seth Rollins, and it had become one-sided due to Rollins' wife, Lynch, getting involved.

Lee returned in order to even the odds, and in her first match in more than 10 years, she and Punk defeated Lynch and Rollins in a mixed tag team bout at Wrestlepalooza.

That was only the start of the rivalry between Lee and Lynch, as AJ later cost Becky the Women's Intercontinental Championship by distracting her during a title defense against Maxxine Dupri in November.

Lee and Lynch were then on opposing sides in a WarGames match at Survivor Series, and AJ's team was victorious.

Lynch later rebounded and won the women's IC title back from Dupri, but it was still clear that her mounting losses to Lee had gotten to her mentally, which led to her calling out AJ during an episode of Raw in February.

Lee convinced The Man to grant her a title match at Elimination Chamber, and AJ took advantage of the opportunity by forcing Lynch to tap out and taking the championship in the process.

After Lee successfully defended the title against Bayley on the March 16 edition of Raw, Becky viciously attacked her. The following week, Lynch made it clear that she would stop at nothing to win back the women's IC title, and Lee agreed to give her a championship opportunity on The Grandest Stage of Them All.

Lynch continued her trend of WrestleMania success in Las Vegas, winning back the Women's Intercontinental Championship and handing Lee her first loss since coming out of retirement.
