Patrick Mahomes Injury Update, Timeline to Return to Chiefs Practice amid ACL Rehab

Andrew PetersMay 2, 2026

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is trending toward a return to the field for the team's OTAs.

According to ESPN's Nate Taylor, head coach Andy Reid told reporters Saturday that Mahomes could participate in OTAs, which run from May 26-28, in a limited capacity.

"He is in a good position to be able to do some things," Reid said. "If he can do some things, [he'll do it]. Phase 2 [of the offseason program], remember, there's no contact and there's no offense versus defense. It's Phase 3 that you get into that. ... He's in a position where he can do everything, I think."

Mahomes suffered a torn ACL in Week 15 against the Los Angeles Chargers and underwent surgery the following day. His initial timeline to return was 9-12 months, meaning the best-case scenario would have him back on the field by September.

Chiefs fans got a positive update on the star quarterback in late March, as ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Mahomes was "progressing" in his rehab and was "tracking" to be ready for the start of the 2026 campaign.

"He's already made great progress from that torn ACL injury. He certainly is tracking to be ready for the start of the regular season," Schefter said on SportsCenter. "That's going to be his goal. He's going to do everything he can to be back out there, and I think people believe that ultimately he will be, but there's a long way to go between now and then."

Reid also said on March 28 that Mahomes was "doing great" and was at the team facility "for seven hours a day."

While the Chiefs struggled tremendously in 2025, Mahomes managed to put together a decent season, recording 3,587 yards and 22 touchdowns in just 14 games before the injury.

Kansas City is hoping to get back to its Super Bowl-contending ways after missing the playoffs in 2025, and having Mahomes on the field the entire season would go a long way in that goal.
