Cubs Must Sign WBC Hero Jon Berti to Contract Amid Seiya Suzuki Injury, MLB Rumors

Erik BeastonMar 20, 2026

Outfielder Seiya Suzuki suffered a knee injury in the World Baseball Classic and, even though manager Craig Counsell announced this week that it was a PCL sprain that was "minor in nature," the team must sign a contingency plan in the form of tournament hero for Italy, veteran Jon Berti.

Teams have checked in on the veteran, with MLB Network's Jon Morosi reporting, "Ten teams have checked in, given Berti's bat and versatility. He intends to sign with a contender that needs him to play multiple positions."

Berti played for Counsell and the Cubs in 2025.

The 36-year-old is a do-everything player who can fill in for Suzuki in the outfield, but also secure an infield spot. He can also be a designated hitter if need be and his bat was on display in the WBC.

In the international tournament, Berti tallied six hits in 16 at-bats, with an average of .375 and OPS of 1.132. The latter has opened some eyes and made him a valuable asset for contending teams looking for one last piece of the puzzle in pursuit of a World Series title.

The Cubs' familiarity with him, and his ability to fill multiple spots on the field, should make him a shoo-in for a spot on the final roster.

Sure, his numbers last season were not impressive (.210/.262/.230), but he heated up while playing for Italy and can fill a key defensive spot should Suzuki not be ready for Opening Day. He can also be support for a team that currently has Matt Shaw as the only utility player who can patrol the infield and outfield.

Berti has proven he still has plenty left in the proverbial tank and, with 10 teams checking in on his availability, there is clear interest in him and what he brings to the clubhouse, both as a player and leader. The Cubs must jump at the opportunity to bolster their roster, add a potentially solid bat to their lineup, and ensure they have someone who can produce if and when the time calls for it.

In a loaded National League, topped by the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, having as many bats as possible, and being able to play quality defense, is key. Berti offers any potential suitor just that. Why should it not be his most recent team that benefits from his services rather than another?
