The Early-Round Strategy
Running backs, running backs, running backs. If you aren't prioritizing the running back position in the first three rounds in your fantasy draft this year, I think you are doing it wrong. There is just so much uncertainty at the position—as opposed to quarterback and wide receiver, where there is legitimate depth—that it's hard for me to imagine why, for instance, you would use a top-seven pick on anything but a running back.
Try to remember back to last year and how much of a mess the position was. There were countless injuries and players stuck in platoons, all while the league continued to transition into a more pass-happy style.
So if you can get an elite running back and take some of the worry out of the position, why not do it? Why not guarantee yourself those easy 12-15 points a week, which the top-end players are always going to get you?
If I can get two running backs in my top 15 at the position in the first three rounds, I'm doing it. I know I can get good value at quarterback later in the draft. I know I can get a flurry of solid wide receivers to play matchups with in the middle rounds. So honestly, if I can get two running backs and maybe an elite tight end like Rob Gronkowski in the first three rounds, I'm doing it.
That's just me. I won't hate on anyone for chasing Aaron Rodgers or Antonio Brown early on. You take what your draft gives you, after all. But if things go to plan, I'm taking care of my running back situation early on this year.
The Solid Middle-Round Values
- Quarterback: Sam Bradford, Philadelphia Eagles; Carson Palmer, Arizona Cardinals
- Running Back: Latavius Murray, Oakland Raiders; Joseph Randle, Dallas Cowboys
- Wide Receiver: Jordan Matthews, Philadelphia Eagles; Brandin Cooks, New Orleans Saints; Jarvis Landry, Miami Dolphins
- Tight End: Dwayne Allen, Indianapolis Colts; Delanie Walker, Tennessee Titans
The Sleepers
- Quarterback: Marcus Mariota, Tennessee Titans
- Running Back: Duke Johnson, Cleveland Browns
- Wide Receiver: Allen Robinson, Jacksonville Jaguars
- Tight End: Tyler Eifert, Cincinnati Bengals
The Rookies
I'm all about Melvin Gordon this year. I love his explosive skill set, I love the offense he'll be playing on and I love the fact that Danny Woodhead's role on the offense is totally separate from Gordon's and won't detract from his value in the least.
I think Gordon will be the top rookie in fantasy this year, and I think he could end up being a very nice RB2 as well.
Todd Gurley will probably be overdrafted, mostly because I think the St. Louis Rams will treat him with kid gloves and limit his touches coming off of an injury-plagued close to his college career. I think you can get better value waiting on a player like T.J. Yeldon, personally.
The wideouts could make a big impact this season, though not as huge as we've seen in years past. Amari Cooper should be the top guy in that regard, just because he's so polished, but I really like Nelson Agholor in Philadelphia a lot as well, as he'll take over in the Jeremy Maclin role. He could post big numbers in that system.
At quarterback, I think Marcus Mariota has more upside than Jameis Winston given his scrambling ability, though Winston has much better weapons in Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson. If I'm drafting a rookie quarterback, however, I'm taking Mariota.
