Rory McIlroy Reveals Status for 2026 Masters amid Back Injury Recovery

Julia StumbaughMar 18, 2026

Rory McIlory confirmed that he will not be competing in any more tournaments over the next three weeks while preparing to defend his 2025 Masters title.

McIlroy told reporters after a TGL Playoff semifinals loss on Tuesday night that he didn't plan to participate in any other tournaments before the Masters begins April 9 at Augusta National.

"I think the Masters is going to be my next event," McIlroy said after he and Boston Common Golf, a team also featuring Keegan Bradley and Adam Scott, conceded an elimination loss to Jupiter Links GC.

McIlroy previously said he "probably" would have added another event to his schedule ahead of the Masters had he missed the cut last week at The Players Championship.

A birdie on the ninth hole of Friday's second round ultimately helped McIlory secure his spot above the cut line, although he finished outside the top 50 at even par after Sunday's final round.

McIlroy last participated in an individual tournament during The Players Championship last week, where he missed the cut after arriving late to TPC Sawgrass due to a lingering back injury.

He said after two rounds at The Players that he was "not all the way" recovered from his back injury, but that he felt it was "progressively getting better."

That same back injury caused McIlroy to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational after two rounds the week prior.

McIlroy said in a statement to the PGA Tour after exiting the tournament he had "felt a small twinge" in his back in the gym that later "developed into muscle spasms in my lower back."

Back in 2023, McIlroy battled similarly described back spasms on his way to a fourth-place finish at the TOUR Championship.

McIlroy said Tuesday that he was no longer taking painkillers for his injury, that he felt "fine" and that his back "wasn't an issue" during the TGL Playoffs.

He will now hope taking some time away from tournament play will help him heal in time to defend the Masters title that allowed him to complete his career Grand Slam last April.
