Caitlin Clark, Angel Reese, USA vs. Spain Box Score, Reaction from FIBA World Cup Qualifier

The United States passed its toughest test of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup qualifying tournament Tuesday, beating Spain 84-70 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Kahleah Copper (20 points), Kelsey Plum (18 points) and Dearica Hamby (14 points) all scored in double figures. As a team, the United States shot 47.1 percent from the floor and out-rebounded Spain 42-29.

Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese had a somewhat muted impact relative to their earlier showings. Clark shot 2-of-7 for seven points, while Reese finished with four points and eight rebounds.

Reese's first bucket came at the end of the first quarter off an inbounds pass from Clark.

Midway through the third quarter, Clark got an assist from fellow Iowa alum Megan Gustafson. The two may represent different countries, but the Hawkeye connection endures.

Clark's playmaking was on display when she found Paige Bueckers with a long outlet pass in the first half, dishing out one of her seven assists.

While the scoring wasn't necessarily there, Clark and Reese found ways to make an impact.

The results of the qualifying phase were ultimately irrelevant for the United States, which earned a World Cup bid by winning last year's AmeriCup. The games were nonetheless important for the players to build up some continuity and impress coach Kara Lawson.

Even with all of the talent at Lawson's disposal in Puerto Rico, some notable stars didn't make the trip. Breanna Stewart and A'ja Wilson are two obvious examples, and they're each a lock for the World Cup as long as they're healthy.

Lawson has to be happy with Team USA reeling off five straight wins, and the individual performances from players on the fringe of the roster will leave her with more headaches when it's time to pick a World Cup team.
