Odighizuwa signed a four-year, $80 million contract with the Cowboys last March, per Over the Cap, which also noted that he carries a cap number of $16.75 million in 2026 and $20.5 million in 2027 and 2028.
Per Over the Cap, the 49ers had a team cap space of $34.3 million before the Odighizuwa move. They would be down to $17.55 million in cap space by adding Odighizuwa.
Over the Cap had the Cowboys $4 million over the cap. This will get them under the cap and add about $12.75 million in space with Odighizuwa off the books.
The move was easy to understand from both sides.
Schultz explained it from the 49ers' perspective. Essentially, they were in the market for a defensive tackle and turned their attention toward Odighizuwa.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys have made a big pivot at the position, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Dallas also made another defensive line move Wednesday by trading Solomon Thomas to the Tennessee Titans for a seventh-round pick swap, per Pelissero.
The Cowboys finished last in the NFL with 30.1 points allowed per game and have gotten to work this offseason reshaping the defense.
They've made a huge change at defensive coordinator, bringing in former Philadelphia Eagles defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach Christian Parker at defensive coordinator. Dallas has also added a few new faces, including Rashan Gary and Jalen Thompson.
The moves continue Wednesday. Odighizuwa was a valued member of the team, but a numbers game ultimately has him going to San Francisco. Thomas also reunites with his former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh, who is now the Titans' head coach.
