New 49ers Rumors on Trent Williams Trade Drop amid Contract Talks in NFL Free Agency

Doric SamMar 9, 2026

The San Francisco 49ers reportedly could be on the verge of parting ways with one of their longtime veterans.

According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, sources said the 49ers are now open to trading star left tackle Trent Williams if the contract situation between the two sides doesn't get resolved.

Last month, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported the 49ers and Williams were "struggling to find a contractual solution" for the 2026 season, since he's set to count for a cap hit of nearly $39 million in the final year of his deal. 49ers general manager John Lynch told reporters that he had "good and productive meetings" with Williams and his agents, and he felt "very positive where that's going."

However, it now sounds like the two sides have reached an impasse. Rapoport noted that Williams has been "frustrated with the process," and "a resolution has not been easy."

At 37 years old, Williams remains one of the most consistent left tackles in the NFL. He was selected to his 12th career Pro Bowl in 2025 while earning second-team All-Pro honors after appearing in 16 games for San Francisco, which went 12-5 and lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional Round of the playoffs.

Williams has been with the 49ers since 2020, earning all three of his first-team All-Pro selections in a San Francisco uniform from 2021 to 2023. Losing him would create a major hole on the offensive line and leave quarterback Brock Purdy without his best protector.

However, it sounds like there's no resolution in sight for the 49ers and Williams, so another team could convince them to ship him away with the right offer.
