The margin of victory of 1.02 points was the smallest between a gold and silver medalist in men's freestyle aerial since it became an Olympic event in 1994.

Roth had an incredible turnaround after a slow start. His 111.06 qualifying score was the lowest of the 16 men who advanced to the final.

Roth quickly put that behind him with a 131.56 score in the first round of the final to set the pace.

Roth's fellow countryman Pirmin Werner built off his stellar qualifying run to post the second-best score of 127.50 on his first final jump.

The race for third place was a close one between Qi Guangpu and Xindi. Guangpu had the slight edge in scoring 121.68 to 120.36 after the first round.

After the first two rounds of the final were done, the six-man field to determine the medal winners was comprised of Roth, Werner, Guangpu, Xindi, Li Tianma and Sun Jiaxu.

Xindi, competing in his third Olympics, finished 14th in his previous two appearances at the Winter Games. His lone medal at a major international event was silver at the 2019 World Championships in the mixed team aerials.

The 30-year-old had the best jump of his life in the biggest moment. He executed a five-twist jump in the final to move into first place.

Roth hit the starting point knowing the score he had to beat, and did everything right to hit that mark. He landed the exact same jump as Xindi, but the judges gave him a slightly lower form score.

Xindi's form score was 12.3, while Roth's was 11.8. Roth did get a higher landing score (8.3 to 8.0), but it wasn't enough to make up the difference.

The win for Xindi marks China's second consecutive Olympic gold medal in this event. China also got a second medal thanks to Li Tianma's third place finish.

This marks the first time that a single country has won multiple medals in the men's aerial event at the Olympics since 1994 when Canada won silver and bronze.

Roth is Switzerland's first Olympic medalist in this event since the '94 Games when Andreas Schönbächler won gold.
