Veteran forward Alina Müller was the OT hero, as she scored with less than a minute remaining in the extra session.

With the victory at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena in Milan, Italy, Switzerland secured its first Olympic medal of any kind in women's ice hockey in 12 years.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, the Swiss played for a medal in women's hockey for the first time ever, and they got the job done, beating Sweden 4-3.

After a scoreless first period, Sweden got on the board first just over midway through the second period with a goal by 20-year-old defenseman Mira Jungåker.

However, the Swiss offered a quick answer when 23-year-old forward Sinja Leemann scored four minutes later to tie the game at 1-1 entering the third period.

There was no more scoring until the OT winner, and much of that was thanks to Swiss goalie Andrea Brändli, who stopped 32 of Sweden's 33 shots en route to victory.

Overall, Switzerland now has two Olympic medals in women's hockey to its credit with a pair of bronzes.

Only Canada, the United States and Finland have medaled more times than Switzerland in women's hockey since it was added to the Olympic program in 1998.

The Swiss have now beaten the Swedes twice with women's hockey bronze medals on the line, and Thursday's win was arguably the biggest one yet in the history of Swiss women's hockey.

Sweden entered the 2026 bronze medal game with a 5-1 record at these Olympics, but that mattered little to Switzerland, who rose to the occasion on the Olympic stage once again.

The women's hockey tournament at the 2026 Winter Olympics will conclude Thursday when the United States and Canada face off in the gold medal game starting at 1:10 p.m. ET.
