The men's hockey semifinals at the 2026 Winter Olympics will have a hard time topping the drama produced from the quarterfinal round.

The United States, Canada and Finland all advanced to the final four by way of overtime wins. Slovakia was the only semifinalist that had a comfortable quarterfinal win.

Canada and Finland square off in Friday's first semifinal. Team USA takes on Slovakia in the other matchup.

Preview

The United States and Canada are heavy favorites on paper, but both Slovakia and Finland are formidable foes.

Slovakia is the more dangerous of the two underdogs. The European country won Group B and overpowered Germany in the quarterfinals.

The team powered by Juraj Slafkovsky of the Montreal Canadiens will come in with zero fear against Team USA.

The Americans haven't looked sharp in parts of their games in Milan, which is something that must change in order to claim the gold medal.

Defensively, the Americans stood strong against Sweden by only conceding one goal.

However, they couldn't convert a bundle of chances into a second goal and were dragged into overtime by the Swedes.

More needs to come from Auston Matthews and others in the attacking zone so that they have a chance of breaking away from Slovakia.

The Brady Tkachuk-Matthew Tkachuk-Jack Eichel line has been excellent throughout the Games, but they need extra contributions from the other two top lines to be as well-rounded of an offense as they can be.

Canada has the easier matchup on paper because Finland's had an up-and-down Olympics.

Finland began the Games with a loss to Slovakia, then it blew out Sweden and Italy. The Finns used a come-from-behind effort to take down Switzerland in the quarterfinals.

Canada has the potential to overwhelm the Finnish defense, especially if it goes back to the Connor McDavid-Nathan MacKinnon-Macklin Celebrini combination.

Celebrini has a case to be the tournament's Most Valuable Player, and if he gets back on the line with two of the best players in the NHL, he could produce a few more goals for Canada.

Canada does have one giant question mark with Sidney Crosby's injury status. Crosby's status for Friday's semifinal is still unknown.

Crosby is Canada's emotional leader, and he's played well alongside the Vegas Golden Knights duo of Mitch Marner and Mark Stone.

The Canadians proved on Wednesday they can win without Crosby on the ice, but moving forward, they need as much scoring depth as possible to handle what they expect to be two more games in their quest for gold.
