Figure Skating - Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics: Day 11

Kaori Sakamoto has been the best women's singles skater in the world since 2022, when she won her first of three, consecutive world championships. She has dominated the sport, showcasing her excellence on every major stage that figure skating has to offer.

Even when Alysa Liu beat her for the 2025 world title, it was considered a significant upset as much because of how great Sakamoto has been as the 19-year-old coming out of retirement to do so.

She enters Thursday's Free Skate event in second place behind fellow countrywoman Ami Nakai, but there is every reason to believe that she can deliver in her last Milano Cortina performance and secure the gold.

If not her, than Nakai or Liu are equally poised to pull off the upset and take the gold medal. Liu's world title win over Sakamoto made her the first American to capture that championship in two decades and she could put an exclamation point on her return to the ice with a win in these Olympics.

Her fellow Americans, Isabeau Levito and Amber Glenn, enter Thursday's competition in eighth and 13th place, respectively. Glenn was expected to be alongside Liu as a gold medal contender but a missed triple loop Tuesday proved costly for the 26 year-old.

Prediction: Sakamoto takes gold, Liu takes silver, and Nakai takes bronze
