Chelsea Transfer News: Baba Rahman Terms Set Amid Gregory Van Der Wiel Rumours

Rory MarsdenAug 5, 2015

Chelsea look to be closing in on the purchase of Augsburg left-back Baba Rahman after the player's agent confirmed he has agreed personal terms with the Blues.

Rahman has been widely linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge following an excellent 2014-15 season in which Augsburg finished fifth in the Bundesliga.

Chelsea are currently short on full-backs following the return of Filipe Luis to Atletico Madrid after just one season with the Blues.

Rahman's agent, Sascha Empacher, said that all that remains is for the two clubs to agree a fee for the 21-year-old, per Sam Long in the Evening Standard: "It is only the clubs that have to find an agreement. We on our side are agreed."

If Rahman makes the switch to Chelsea, he will initially play as a back-up to Cesar Azpilicueta. It is essential that the Blues add at least one more full-back to their squad before the transfer window closes, as Azpilicueta and right-back Branislav Ivanovic are currently the only options, per Bleacher Report's Andy Brassell:

Blues boss Jose Mourinho could perhaps even be in the market for two new full-backs, with reports suggesting Chelsea are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain right-back Gregory Van der Wiel.

Mourinho has suggested that his transfer activity for the summer may be over with the 2015-16 Premier League set to begin on Saturday, per Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast (h/t talkSPORT's Craig Bloomfield):

But the Blues will surely add some depth in defence before the closing of the transfer window, and Van der Wiel could be one of those additions.

The Dutchman recently revealed that he is set to be offloaded by the Ligue 1 champions, per French outlet Le Parisien (h/t French football expert Jonathan Johnson):

Van der Wiel is apparently available for around £14 million, and Chelsea are "monitoring developments" along with Manchester United, according to Sky Sports (h/t Fox Sports).

The 27-year-old Van der Wiel is a very capable attacking right-back and would provide good cover for Ivanovic—who is traditionally a centre-back anyway.

Chelsea need to add genuine depth to their defence, as not only are they short on the flanks, but they are over-reliant on an ageing John Terry and an inconsistent Gary Cahill in the middle.

The addition of both Rahman and Van der Wiel would give Mourinho flexibility across the back four, a necessary luxury as Chelsea will be vying for trophies both domestically and in Europe in the upcoming term.
