There was a repeating theme of comebacks Tuesday, as four of the first six matches saw first-set losers go on to win their respective matches.

Varvara Lepchenko overcame a 3-6 first-set loss with a 6-2 win in the second set and a 7-6 nail-biter in the third to move on to the second round, defeating Mirjana Lucic-Baroni. She won't have an easy time with Wozniacki waiting for her.

Also overcoming a 3-6 first-set loss, Ajla Tomljanovic prevented Vitalia Diatchenko from winning another set, winning the second and third by a score of 6-0.

The WTA provided the replay of Tomljanovic's comeback:

Elina Svitolina defeated fellow Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko after dropping the first set 6-4. An extremely evenly matched affair saw Svitolina take the next two sets 6-4, 7-5 to move on.

Svitolina's match point is shown here (via the WTA):

Last year's finalist, Angelique Kerber, moved past Daria Gavrilova in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. She's still aiming to replicate her 2014 form.

Kerber managed to handle Gavrilova's serve well, winning 54 percent of her return points and neutralizing her opponent's advantage.

This time, Serena won't be in Kerber's way if she does manage to make the final.

The Bank of the West Classic continues Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, with six more matches on the slate, as the second round of the singles tournament gets underway, while the doubles division finishes its first round.
