Elana Meyers Taylor Wins Her 1st Gold Medal in Monobob, Ties USA Winter Olympics Record in 5th Games

Elana Meyers Taylor made history on Monday.

The American bobsledder took home her sixth Olympic medal after taking home gold in the monobob, meaning she's now tied for the most career Winter Olympic medals by an American woman. She also has the second-most Winter Olympic medals overall by an American, only behind speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno, who has eight.

Monday's win, however, marked her first gold medal.

Additionally, Meyers Taylor made history on Monday as she became the oldest Winter Olympic gold medalist in an individual event, per NBC's Nick Zaccardi.

"Nobody in their right mind would say, 'Hey, a 41-year-old woman is going to have a shot at another Olympic medal in a speed and power sport,'" she said last week. "I want my children to know that people told their mom that it can't happen and then she went for it anyways."

Meyers Taylor, who was a shortstop and pitcher for Georgie Washington softball from 2003 to 2007, is competing in her fifth Olympics. She made her debut in Vancouver in 2010, where she won bronze in the two-woman bobsled.

From there, she claimed silver in the two-woman bobsled in Sochi in 2014 and Pyeongchang in 2018. She then won silver in the monobob in Beijing in 2022, as well as bronze in the two-woman bobsled.

The 41-year-old from Oceanside, California, became the first woman to win a medal in a men's event in 2014 when she did so in the mixed-gender four-man race. She also raced as the pilot for that event, an uncommon feat for women in bobsledding.

Despite all of her achievements, Meyers Taylor was still searching for her first gold medal, and now she has it.

Joining Meyers Taylor on the podium on Monday was American Kaillie Armbruster Humphries, who finished third. It marked the second time during these Games that multiple Americans have finished on the podium in the same event.
