UConn's Geno Auriemma Breaks WCBB Record With Latest Ranking in 2026 AP Poll
Seeing UConn in the women's Top 25 is nothing new, but there was something special about the Huskies presence in the Associated Press' Week 16 rankings.
It's their 655th week in the AP poll during the Geno Auriemma era, putting him past legendary coach with Tara VanDerveer for the all-time mark.
There wasn't much drama about whether the record would fall. The Huskies are now 29-0 after beating Villanova and Providence last week. They received all 31 first-place votes.
When Auriemma tied VanDerveer, the AP's Doug Feinberg noted UConn had remained in the Top 25 for 619 straight weeks going back to the start of the 1993-94 season. For added context, the AP has released 900 women's basketball polls in total.
Connecticut finishes up with Georgetown and St. John's before the Big East tourney. Considering the conference doesn't have another ranked representative, UConn's road to a Big East title will be pretty straightforward. The odds of the Huskies carrying their perfect start into the NCAA tournament look good.
Women's basketball has seen more and more parity in recent years with talent being dispersed more widely across the sport. The transfer portal and NIL have only accelerated that trend.
It's difficult to envision another program enjoying the kind of consistency that UConn has enjoyed across three decades. Auriemma's record may stand the test of time.
