Tyreek Hill-Mahomes Reunion, Chiefs Landing Spot Eyed by NFL Fans After Dolphins Release

Doric SamFeb 16, 2026

Star receiver Tyreek Hill hit the open market on Monday, and it didn't take long for NFL fans to begin speculating about his next landing spot.

After ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Miami Dolphins are releasing Hill, fans quickly began floating a reunion with the Kansas City Chiefs and star quarterback Patrick Mahomes as his next move.

As Schefter noted, this marks the first time in Hill's NFL career that he will be an unrestricted free agent, and the Dolphins saved $22.8 million against the salary cap by releasing him. ESPN's Field Yates pointed out that Hill is "immediately eligible" to sign with another team and won't have to wait until March 13, as other soon-to-be free agents do, since he was released from his contract.

Hill began his NFL career with the Chiefs in 2016 and spent six seasons with the team, winning a Super Bowl title in the 2019 season. After spending his rookie year primarily as a return specialist, he quickly blossomed into one of the best receivers in the league. He and Mahomes were known for the deep-ball connections, as his speed allowed him to blow by defenders and help create one of the most potent offenses the league had ever seen.

Kansas City traded Hill to Miami ahead of the 2022 season in exchange for a haul of draft picks and went on to win two more Super Bowl titles without him. While Hill initially thrived with the Dolphins, posting back-to-back 1,700-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023, he fell short of the 1,000-yard mark in each of the last two years, and his 2025 campaign was cut short after four games due to a devastating knee injury that included multiple torn ligaments, including his ACL.

Mahomes is also recovering from a torn ACL, but he would surely welcome the chance to bring Hill back into the fold. The Chiefs are hoping to return to Super Bowl contention next season, and a reunion with Hill would certainly improve their chances in 2026.
