Women's Ice Hockey Medal Finals Schedule
- Bronze Medal Game: Sweden vs. Switzerland (Feb. 19, 8:40 a.m. ET)
- Gold Medal Game: United States vs. Canada (Feb. 19, 1:10 p.m. ET)
Sweden strolled through the group stage, winning all four of its games and finishing with a plus-16 goal differential. The Swedes then blanked Czechia 2-0 in the quarterfinals.
It took a little over five minutes into Monday's contest for Sweden to discover this was going to be a far different challenge.
That's when Cayla Barnes got the United States on the board. Her long-range effort eluded Swedish goaltender Ebba Svensson Träff, whose vision was obstructed and couldn't react in time to make the save:
The 1-0 lead held for the remainder of the period before Team USA blitzed the Swedes for four goals in the second frame. Abbey Murphy, Kendall Coyne Schofield and Hayley Scamurra all scored over a stretch of less than three minutes.
Midway through the onslaught, Emma Söderberg replaced Träff in goal for Sweden but didn't fare much better. She was on the ice for 1:49 before Scamurra made it 5-0.
With the outcome pretty much decided, the U.S. cruised to the finish line as the third period unfolded in straightforward fashion.
The United States has now scored 31 goals to just one allowed for the Winter Games. Team USA beat Canada and Switzerland by identical 5-0 score lines as well.
John Wroblewski's squad will like its odds of bringing home a third gold medal. A lot can happen in a one-off knockout game, though.
With a matchup against Canada in the final, the Americans will need to keep their eyes on the prize and take nothing for granted.
